Intel May Manufacture Nvidia's New GPUs

Computer hardware

Nvidia wants to lessen their dependence on TSMC. One way to do that is by partnering with Intel. This would be helpful for Nvidia. They could have more options for chip production. The main goal is to have a stable production of chips. That's why Nvidia is considering this partnership.

Jensen Huang, Nvidia CEO, speaks of working with Intel. They aim to lessen problems with the supply chain. These issues are happening due to tensions between the US, China, and Taiwan. The collaboration will diversify production venues.

Nvidia made lots of money in the first quarter due to high demand for AI hardware. There's a big need for server-grade GPUs, and TSMC can't make enough to meet demand. Nvidia wants to find other ways to make chips. Samsung helped Nvidia make Ampere-based GPUs, so they could help with production. But that might not be enough. Intel is the only other company with enough capacity to fulfill Nvidia's needs.

During a Q&A at Computex, Team Green's CEO suggested they may collaborate with Team Blue. Huang liked the GPU test results from Intel's new node.

We work with Samsung and may work with Intel. Pat Gelsinger said we're assessing the process. We just got test chip results for Intel's next-gen process. The results look good.

This statement isn't clear about whether the test chip has Nvidia's design. It also doesn't say which process node it uses. Intel announced in January that it has a customer for the Intel 3 nodes, which may be the next gen process mentioned. Intel also has the Angstrom-era nodes ready for 2025. However, it's more likely that products will be released next year due to high demand, which rules out the Angstrom nodes.

Nvidia probably won't let Intel produce their top-tier server and gaming GPUs right away. But it's possible that Intel might make some of Nvidia's lower-mid-level gaming GPUs and processors like Grace Hopper. This could help Nvidia's supply chains get better and rely less on TSMC. Especially with all the tension between the US, China, and Taiwan.
