iTWire - Most cloud pros saw at least one security incident in last year: survey

Computers and information technology

A study conducted to analyze industry patterns by surveying 501 IT professionals and C-suite members in the US, UK, and Germany has discovered that 88% of them encountered a cloud security issue within the past year.

SUSE, an open source company based in Germany, conducted a survey to bring attention to the current state of cloud native utilization, significant worries regarding security, and potential solutions to address these issues.

The results of the survey were revealed by the company at SUSECON, their yearly conference that is currently taking place in Munich.

According to the study, individuals who make IT decisions reported encountering an average of four instances of security breaches relating to cloud computing in the past year. Individuals in the US experienced five such incidents on average, while those in Germany encountered three.

Around 33% of the respondents indicated that their major cause of concern in cloud security was the storage of data on cloud providers or third-party servers.

Other issues that were given attention included attacks that can happen during operation from people who are a threat, managing security policies, connecting different systems, and using automated processes.

According to the survey, people spent around 36% of their IT budget on security systems that are native to the cloud. It was found that the percentage was higher in the United States (42%) than in Europe (33%).

Regarding methods of security, automation and firewall within containers were commonly utilized with an equal percentage of 38% for each.

According to the company, US leaders have a higher tendency to use free or paid observability or security tools compared to those in Europe. The percentage of US decision-makers using these tools is around 33%, while in Europe it is 24%.

We can see a similar pattern for PSP and PSA protocols where 31% of users prefer them compared to 22% who don't. In the case of Kubernetes network policies, 32% of users opt for them while 15% do not. Additionally, users have shown a preference for free CVEs, with 26% choosing them while 18% go for paid scanners.

Around 33% of those surveyed expressed their anticipation that re-evaluating and giving priority to goals that are linked to the ability to audit source codes will become crucial in the upcoming years. This assessment involves conducting tests and personally inspecting the codebase to uncover any potential issues or bugs.

According to the survey, 45% of people in the United States believe that it is very important to check the auditability of source code, while 36% of respondents emphasized the importance of the depth, quality and security of SBOM. This is necessary to guarantee that businesses can attain their objectives related to supply chain security.

Germany and the UK lagged behind in source-code auditing priorities with only 23% and 26%, respectively. Furthermore, they spent comparatively less on security for cloud native applications.

However, European individuals (40%) had a greater likelihood of expecting a reassessment of objectives regarding construction standards than their American counterparts (15%).

Dr Thomas Di Giacomo, the Chief Technology and Product Officer of SUSE, has acknowledged that all businesses are striving towards digital transformation. In order to expedite this transformation, they can rely on open source solutions.

The trend report called 'Securing the Cloud' focuses on the thoughts and experiences of IT groups as they deal with the increasing use of intricate cloud-based technologies.

The risk of security breaches around the world is always changing, presenting new obstacles to overcome. Our organization is in a prime position to assist companies in selecting trustworthy open source options for their essential and imaginative endeavors as they transition to cloud platforms.
