Smartphone shipments to Vietnam dropped by 30% in Q1 compared to the same time last year. This is the biggest decrease out of the five major Southeast Asian markets. This comes from a new report.

Counterpoint reported that Malaysia had a negative growth rate of 29%. This placed them second to last in the rankings. Thailand had a 1% drop in shipments.

Shipments in Southeast Asian markets, like Indonesia and the Philippines, decreased by 13%.

Counterpoint took a look at the five main Southeast Asian markets for smartphone sales. The markets examined were Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, and Thailand. The report found that the market has been hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite this, some markets showed growth, with Indonesia and Myanmar having the strongest sales. However, the report predicts a decline of 10% in smartphone sales for the year 2020.

Glen Cardoza, an analyst at Counterpoint, said people in Vietnam are still not completely confident in their spending.

Buyer sentiment has been impacted by inflation in Southeast Asia. This has caused a drop in the demand for new phones.

A different company found that smartphone sales in Vietnam dropped by 30% compared to last year. They sold 2.5 million phones in the first two months.

"The folks have been cutting down expenses since January," a member of a smartphone sales outlet commented.

Cardoza said that Vietnam got a lot of deliveries in the final quarter of last year. This is a reason why there was a decline in the first quarter.

The economic challenges have not impacted the high-end segment. Counterpoint data supports this.

Samsung sold the most in Vietnam from January to March. They got 21% of the market. Oppo and Vivo followed with 20% and 14% respectively. Xiaomi and Realme both had 14% too. Apple had the least with 7%.

All the brands went down except for Apple which went up 18% compared to last year.
