Wholesale Fruit Market Report: Week 29

This week, the market welcomed the initial harvest of blueberries from Peru. Furthermore, an assortment of plums from the United States have made their way one by one, followed by an array of citrus fruits sourced from South Africa and Australia.

Up to now, there have been two fresh brands of Peruvian blueberries hitting the market. One of these brands offers two types called POP and Beauty, with different sizes ranging from 16mm+ to 20mm+. Among them, the 16mm+ POP variant is the most popular and is priced at approximately ¥140 per piece. The merchant mentioned that, despite the influence of the pandemic this year, blueberries have arrived earlier compared to last year, and both the price and taste remain mostly unchanged.

The Black Diamond, Emerald, and Midnight Rose are currently available American plum varieties for sale. Among them, Black Diamond plums have been on the market for approximately two weeks, while the other types are in the early stages of availability. Certain sellers have mentioned that despite the relatively high price, the limited supply and excellent taste of Midnight Rose plums have resulted in smooth sales. On the other hand, Emerald plums still possess a slightly sour flavor. Some merchants have noted that the prices and taste of imported plums are now comparable to those in the past, but recent sales have been unsatisfactory. This is mainly due to the fact that domestic plums have the advantages of both good taste and competitive pricing, which has affected the demand for imported plums.

This week, the cost of durian has increased. The A6 Thai Monthong durian was priced at around ¥680-¥780 per piece, but reached as high as ¥800 per piece. The Vietnamese Monthong durian saw a similar price increase, with both types rising by approximately 15% compared to last week. Traders have stated that with the upcoming summer vacation, there is a demand in the market. However, the recent supply of durians has been lower, leading to the price hike. Reports suggest that the quality of durians in the latter half of the year has not been as good, resulting in more cases of spoiled fruit. Therefore, buyers are being more cautious when making purchases.

The current cost of imported avocados is approximately ¥60-¥70 per piece. There hasn't been much change recently, but during the same time last year, they were about ¥90-¥100 per piece. It has been reported that the price of avocados increased around April this year because some popular tea shops introduced avocado drinks, leading to a significant rise in demand for avocados. The higher price attracted more merchants to join the sales, resulting in increased sales from the production areas. However, the products that arrived after some time were of poor quality and there was a sudden surge in volume, causing the price to drop immediately. As of May, the market is still slow.

Additional varieties of citrus fruits from South Africa and Australia have made their way to the market. Currently, there has been little alteration in the overall demand for citrus from these regions.

Regarding the main fruits grown domestically, the output of apricots from Xinjiang experienced a decline due to frost in May, resulting in a limited supply in the market. On the other hand, the market for Shaanxi Dali winter jujube remains relatively stable, with prices and sales varying across different brands. Available domestic plum varieties include Candy Red, Cherry, and Banbianhong, with the majority sourced from Yunnan and Sichuan provinces. Some merchants focus on selling premium domestic fruits, emphasizing branding and gift box packaging, leading to successful sales of several products.
