"Supply of good quality grapes down 30-40%"

Lucien De Wit's LuBa Fresh Journey

The scorching temperatures in Southern Europe are impacting the grape industry, including the grapes grown in Italy. "Numerous grapes have been singed and their quality is noticeably lower in the market. The amount of high-quality grapes available has decreased by around 30-40% compared to last year. An abundance of unsuitable grapes are flooding the market, making them inappropriate for supermarkets or consumers seeking premium products," states Luciën de Wit, representing the Dutch enterprise, LuBa Fresh.

Across the Mediterranean, numerous harvests have been marred by disappointing outcomes. To illustrate, Greece encountered substantial harm to its crops, while Spanish vineyards bore the brunt of excessive rainfall. Similarly, Italy experienced significant flooding during the month of June, and as a result of the subsequent heatwave in July, a considerable number of grapes succumbed to bursting. Thus, it appears highly likely that the quantity of grapes harvested will be significantly diminished.

Nevertheless, Luciën is content with the current sales figures. "The flavor of the grapes is impeccable, and there is a strong demand, significantly exceeding that of the previous year," he expresses.

The fact that there is a 35% decrease in the number of grapes is not yet creating alarm in the market. Prices have slightly increased, but that is advantageous for all parties involved.

Next week, we will be receiving the final batch of Victoria grapes. Following that, we will be transitioning to the Italia season, which is expected to continue until late November. The Italia seedless grapes will be available for approximately €12 for 4.5 kg. As for the Victoria and Palieri grapes, they will be priced at around €2 per kilogram, Luciën states.
