Huawei obtains highest-level security certification for smart device OSs
[Delft, Netherlands, August 15th, 2023] Huawei's HongMeng Kernel has achieved the prestigious Evaluation Assurance Level 6 Augmented (EAL6+) certificate, making it the first-ever general-purpose operating system (OS) kernel to attain this highest level of security recognition. With this distinction, Huawei has solidified its position as the pioneering smart device manufacturer to receive such esteemed certification in this specific area.
Operating system kernels serve as the basis for both security and privacy in operating systems. The Common Criteria (CC) certification, also referred to as the ISO/IEC 15408 standard, is a well-known accreditation in the worldwide IT field that greatly impacts information security. CC is an extensively applied and internationally acknowledged criterion for evaluating product security.
SGS Brightsight, a prominent security assessment laboratory, conducted the security evaluation for the HongMeng Kernel developed by Huawei. Mr. Kai-Fan Chang, who serves as the COO Asia at SGS Brightsight, expressed his admiration for being chosen to carry out the evaluation of Huawei's HongMeng Kernel. The evaluation determined that the kernel has met the international Common Criteria EAL6+ level, which is a significant achievement. Mr. Chang further believes that the HongMeng Kernel will play a crucial role in the future development of Huawei's Internet of Things (IoT) and mobile devices. Additionally, Huawei's commitment to producing secure products is evident in their successful attainment of the CC EAL6+ certification.
In the blog section, Gong Ti, who is the head of Huawei's Consumer BG Software Engineering Department, expressed that the security features of the HongMeng Kernel have gained acknowledgement from globally recognized certification organizations. This signifies that the HongMeng Kernel has achieved the utmost level of security for operating system kernels, elevating the security of devices and information and communication technology (ICT) to unprecedented heights.
According to Dr. Michael Lemke, the head of security at Huawei Germany, kernels serve as the base for maintaining the safety and confidentiality of systems. Huawei is dedicated to upholding security and privacy in the domains of information and communication technology and devices. Going forward, Huawei will persist in adhering to the universally accepted standards for fundamental software and cybersecurity. Furthermore, the security features of Huawei's products will continuously align with globally acknowledged optimal methods.
The CC EAL6+ certificate is a significant achievement for Huawei's cyber security and reflects the industry's acknowledgment of their efforts. So far, Huawei has acquired over 500 certifications through well-established cyber security programs such as CC, FIPS, ISO 19790, PCI DSS, and CSA STAR.
