Barry Matties: John, I want to extend my congratulations on your latest publication. The title is truly captivating, so let's delve into it. Which routines are in dire need of eradication?

John Mitchell: In my conversations with leaders in the industry and studying IPC's sentiment surveys, it has become clear that we are still operating in the same way we have been for the past 20 years, despite the fact that the world around us has changed. It is crucial that we make changes in our approach now, given the current circumstances. Our industry has always faced difficulties in attracting and retaining the right talent for our workforce. This book focuses on two important aspects that strongly support IPC's goal of developing a skilled workforce: finding and retaining the right people. Initially, we considered naming the book "Finders Keepers." The appendix of the book consists of a white paper that provides insights on how to overcome these workforce challenges and improve the electronics industry.

The blog section is designed in a friendly and enjoyable manner to cater specifically to individuals seeking to recruit and maintain skilled individuals. It is primarily targeted towards them. If you spend some time with me, you're likely to hear me reference numerous movie quotes, which you'll also find scattered throughout the book. Our aim was to maintain a lively and effortless reading experience, while still offering valuable resources that are essential for you.

Matties: In the past, it was common to secure employment, enroll in a retirement plan, and eventually enjoy a well-deserved retirement after three or four decades. However, it appears that this era has become a thing of the past.

Mitchell: Yes, there are only a handful of companies that engage in such practices.

Matties: It appears that there have been changes in corporate culture too. Can you identify the areas where these cultural shifts are happening?

Mitchell: The biggest part of the book, if you consider diversity, equity, and inclusion as well, discusses the significance of retaining the appropriate individuals, which naturally begins with recruiting the suitable individuals. It revolves around the type of company you are, which is your culture. It's not something you acquire instantly or manufacture through a few displays. It hinges upon your identity, actions, and the way you interact with your team.

When I visit Munich, I typically attend productronica in November. During this time, I often find myself surrounded by the chilly and rainy atmosphere of late autumn. However, for EIPC's latest Summer Conference, the experience in Munich was quite different. I had the pleasure of experiencing clear blue skies, sunny warmth, and extended, more radiant evenings. I genuinely relished being in the Schwabing district, located to the north of the city.
