Events can be less wasteful: advocate

Sustainability

EcoSuperior has launched an innovative program called Eco Green in Thunder Bay, Ontario. The program aims to promote sustainability and reduce environmental impact during group events. Denise Smith, the coordinator of EcoSuperior's rethinking waste initiative, explains that gatherings like parties, festivals, and street fairs can also be opportunities to celebrate and protect the planet. The program offers a green event guide for organizers of medium to large events, such as conferences and weddings, who want to prioritize sustainability. Smith emphasizes the importance of community participation, environmental education, and raising awareness of eco-friendly choices and products available locally. The team at EcoSuperior observed successful sustainable practices at recent events, such as BrewHa! and WineOh!, such as using reusable glasses and providing free bus passes to reduce driving. The program also encourages support for local businesses and the reduction of waste through the use of reusable items and paper containers. The guide also includes information on litter prevention and setting up proper waste management systems. By hosting green events, organizers can save costs, reduce waste, and demonstrate their commitment to environmental responsibility. The Eco Green Guide can be downloaded for free from the EcoSuperior website, and staff are available to answer questions. Plans are also in place to develop the guide into a certification and reward program with business window badges.
