Novo Nordisk, a company focused on researching and developing scientific advancements for improving human health, has initiated the process of reducing carbon emissions in their air transportation through the utilization of DHL Global Forwarding's eco-friendly service, known as GoGreen Plus. This eco-conscious effort is projected to result in a substantial decrease of at least 30,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) by the year 2023.

DHL provides its customers with the opportunity to make their transportation more environmentally friendly through the GoGreen Plus service. This service allows carriers to use sustainable biofuels instead of traditional fuels on behalf of DHL. The resulting reduction in emissions is then credited to DHL and distributed to the shippers. To support this initiative, DHL Global Forwarding is testing a new system for measuring greenhouse gas emissions with the Smart Freight Centre and other partners. The goal of this system is to separate the measurement of the environmental benefits of sustainable fuels from their physical transportation, ensuring accuracy and adherence to industry standards. By offering a practical accounting framework, this system is a step towards a universal industry standard. Customers can access the GoGreen Plus service through DHL Global Forwarding’s digital platform, myDHLi.

DHL Global Forwarding states that they are experiencing a rise in the need for eco-friendly transportation options that utilize sustainable fuels like sustainable aviation fuels. Whether it's during a bidding process or while conversing with current clients, more and more cargo transporters are not only asking for increased transparency regarding greenhouse gas emissions but also considering sustainable alternatives, even if they require extra expenses. However, as the demand continues to grow, there must be a significant increase in the availability of sustainable fuels.

According to Thomas George, the chief commercial officer at DHL Global Forwarding, it is a positive thing that our customers hold the same belief as us - that the time to reduce carbon emissions is right now. More and more of our customers are actively incorporating sustainability into their overall business plan, and we are happy to show them that through our GoGreen Plus service and the use of eco-friendly fuels, it is possible to efficiently decrease transport emissions as of today.

Looking ahead, it is expected that e-fuels, including hydrogen and other synthetic fuels produced sustainably, will become more widely accessible from 2030 onwards. Until that point, it is crucial that we expand the utilization of renewable biofuels, and this can only be achieved through collaborative actions.

Dorethe Nielsen, the vice president of Novo Nordisk's Circular for Zero sustainability plan, expressed, "This marks another milestone in Novo Nordisk's ongoing commitment to fostering the growth of eco-friendly aviation fuel. Our transportation of life-saving medications via air contributes significantly to our overall emissions. By taking action in this arena, we aim to inspire other businesses to follow suit and reduce their carbon footprint."
