KUALA LUMPUR, July 27 — BYD Dolphin will soon be available in Malaysia at a starting price of only RM99,900. This affordable fully electric compact hatchback is the brand's second offering in Malaysia, following the successful launch of the Atto 3 last year.

We stumbled upon an online brochure that revealed the initial cost, which happens to be significantly less than the predicted price of less than RM110,000 mentioned at the EVx 2023 event last weekend. Taking into account its affordable price, physical appearance, and the listed features in the brochure, BYD appears to have yet another successful product in their possession.

BYD Dolphin cost, options, guarantee

The BYD Dolphin comes in two distinct versions, with the first option being the Dynamic Standard. Although the initial cost mentioned is RM99,900, it solely pertains to the vehicle's price without any additional features or expenses.

After including additional charges like registration fees, HP ownership endorsement, base plate, and inspection, the final on-the-road (OTR) price for Dolphin amounts to RM100,530, excluding insurance. However, even with these costs, Dolphin remains the second most budget-friendly electric vehicle (EV) in Malaysia, coming in just after the Neta V.

In Malaysia, there is another option called the Premium Extended available. The cost of the car alone is RM124,900, with the on-the-road price excluding insurance coming to RM125,730.

Just like the Atto 3, the Dolphin comes with a warranty of 6 years / 150,000km for the vehicle itself. The electric vehicle's high-voltage battery has a separate warranty of 8 years / 160,000km, and the Dolphin's drive unit is also safeguarded by a dedicated warranty of 8 years / 150,000km.

In addition to that, the EV's multimedia system, wheel bearing, shock absorber, PM2.5 measuring instrument, dust cover, AC/DC charging port assembly, bushings/gaskets, and USB charging port connector are also backed by a warranty of 3 years or 60,000km. Furthermore, the car's lights, Tyre Pressure Monitoring (TPM) module, suspension, and ball joint are included in a warranty of 4 years or 100,000km.

Speed, distance, power supply, time required for charging

The Dolphin Dynamic Standard comes with a sole electric motor that generates 70kW (94hp) and 180Nm of rotational force. As per the promotional material, this version has the capability to go from 0 to 100km/h in 12.3 seconds.

When it comes to the battery, the Dolphin Dynamic Standard is accompanied by a 44.9kWh BYD Blade Battery pack, allowing it to provide a WLTP range of 340km. The electric vehicle is furnished with a built-in 7kW AC charger and is also capable of accommodating DC fast charging of up to 60kW.

Regarding the more advanced choice, the Premium Extended provides a stronger electric engine that generates 150kW (equivalent to 201hp) along with 310Nm of force. It's not surprising that this version can speed up much faster, with a 0 to 100km/h time of only 7 seconds.

Moreover, the Premium Extended edition additionally includes a bigger 60.48kWh battery pack and a WLTP distance of 427km. This version also showcases a built-in 7kW AC charger, although its maximum power intake from a DC rapid charger is slightly elevated to 80kW.

The Dolphin possesses a mechanism called vehicle-to-load (V2L) that enables users to supply electricity to external devices. Additionally, the brochure mentions that a V2L adapter, along with a convenient charger, is included as part of the standard package.

Additionally, it should be mentioned that the Premium Extended version offers an extra benefit with its multi-link suspension, contrasting the torsion beam arrangement found in the Dynamic Standard model. Regarding the size of the wheels, the Premium Extended option is equipped with 17-inch wheels, whereas the Dynamic Standard variant comes with 16-inch wheels.

The inside space mirrors the outside appearance.

Although they may not match perfectly in terms of color, the interior of the Dolphin follows the same color scheme as the exterior that you have chosen. If you opt for the Urban Grey exterior color on the Dynamic Standard model, you will have a combination of gray and black for its interior.

If you selected Sand White, the interior would feature a combination of brown and black. This color choice is also offered for the Premium Extended version.

The Premium Extended model offers other color choices, such as the Ski White and Urban Grey blend and the Atlantis Grey and Delan Black combination. These color options come with a matching interior in shades of grey and black.

The Surf Blue & Urban Grey combination is another option for getting the RM125k model, which features a delightful blend of blue and black interior. No matter which Dolphin variant you opt for, synthetic leather seats are a standard inclusion.

Meanwhile, the Dolphin also comes equipped with a 5-inch digital dashboard for the driver. The car's entertainment system makes use of a 12.8-inch touch screen that can rotate automatically, similar to the one found in the Atto 3.

6 speakers are responsible for delivering an exceptional sound experience within the Dolphin. Additionally, the EV is equipped with Apple CarPlay compatibility, which can be accessed via a USB connection.

Amazing range of safety precautions Revolutionary safety measures on offer Exceptional assortment of protective features Incredible lineup of security provisions Unmatched array of safety enhancements Remarkable assortment of safety safeguards

Even though the Dolphin is considered a basic electric vehicle, it comes equipped with various safety features. To begin with, it includes six airbags and a 360-degree camera along with features like ABS, EPB, ESC, TCS, and EBD.

Equipped with a pair of ultrasonic radars on the front end of the electric vehicle (EV) and an additional trio on the back, the Dolphin boasts an abundance of features in its Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS). Among its impressive offerings are Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), which adjusts the speed of the vehicle according to the traffic conditions; Lane Departure Warning (LDW), which alerts the driver when the vehicle deviates from its lane; Lane Keeping Support (LKS), which helps the driver stay within the lane; Lane Departure Prevention (LDP), which actively prevents lane departure; Lane Change Collision Warning (LCW), which warns of potential collisions during lane changes; and Emergency Lane Keeping Assist (ELKA), which provides assistance to quickly and safely guide the vehicle during emergencies.

The selection of features in the ADAS package includes an AEBS for automatic emergency braking, a PCW for predicting collisions, an RCW for warning of rear collisions, an RCTA for alerting about cross traffic from behind, an RCTB for braking to prevent rear cross traffic accidents, and a BSD for detecting blind spots. In addition, the Dolphin’s LED headlight is equipped with a High Beam Assist function that intelligently adjusts the headlight beams based on the prevailing driving conditions.
