Malaysia’s Anwar talks Tesla, Starlink with Elon Musk

Says Anwar Ibrahim, the automobile manufacturer plans to set up its main office in the state of Selangor in the upcoming months.

The Prime Minister of Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim, engaged in discussions with the immensely wealthy technology tycoon, Elon Musk, regarding potential investments within the Southeast Asian nation.

On Friday, Anwar mentioned that he had a conversation with Musk for approximately 25 minutes through a virtual platform. They talked about the possible introduction of Tesla, an electric car manufacturing company, in Malaysia, as well as the satellite internet service called Starlink.

"I appreciate the company's keenness and choice to make investments in Malaysia, and Elon Musk's openness to visit Malaysia," Anwar commented in a statement.

Anwar announced that the automotive company from Texas will set up its Malaysian main office in Selangor, the state surrounding the bustling city, Kuala Lumpur, in the coming months.

Earlier this month, Tesla made an exciting announcement stating that its lineup of vehicles would be available for purchase in Malaysia starting July 20. Prior to this, the company had received approval from the authorities to import their vehicles into the country. In a recent tweet, Tesla also revealed that their much-awaited Model Y car can now be ordered by customers in Malaysia.

According to Anwar, Malaysia will persist in fulfilling its pledge to attain net-zero carbon emissions as soon as 2050.

"He mentioned that Malaysia possesses a well-rounded strategy and environment, alongside advantageous assets, to bolster the clean energy sector, particularly electric mobility."

Anwar stated that they also conversed about the potential of Starlink to offer faster and more extensive internet coverage in Malaysia, specifically targeting remote regions.

"He stated that this endeavor will enhance the capacity and welfare of individuals, with a particular focus on education as well as the opportunities in agricultural technology and income generation."
